WE HAVE some great news for caffeine lovers. Drinking two to three cups of coffee a day could dramatically improve your sex life, a new study has shown.
Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Centre found men who drank two cups of coffee a day (or between 85 and 170mg of caffeine) were 42 per cent less likely to experience erectile dysfunction compared to men who drank no coffee.
The results were slightly weaker for men who drank three cups (between 171 and 303mg of caffeine a day). They were 39 per cent less likely to report erectile dysfunction.
Scientists studied almost 4,000 US men drinking caffeinated drinks including coffee, tea, fizzy and sports drinks and asked them about their experience with erectile dysfunction. The findings were published in the American science journal PLOS ONE.
While the study was not able to establish cause and effect, the trend rang true among overweight, obese and hypertensive men.
“Even though we saw a reduction in the prevalence of ED with men who were obese, overweight and hypertensive, that was not true of men with diabetes. Diabetes is one of the strongest risk factors for ED, so this was not surprising,” the study’s author Professor David Lopez said in a statement.
So how does it work? Well, caffeine relaxes the muscles in the penis, which allows for increased blood flow and a stronger erection.
“The suggested biological mechanism is that caffeine triggers a series of pharmacological effects that lead to the relaxation of the penile helicine arteries and the cavernous smooth muscle that lines cavernosal spaces, thus increasing penile blood flow,” the study says.
Data for the study was sourced from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey
