We all look at ourselves in the mirror every day, but Dermatologist Dr. Sandra Lee says what’s important is what you don’t see. “We examine our faces and try to take care of ourselves, but most of the damage our skin suffers is actually not visible to the naked eye.”
Dr. Sandra Lee shared her secrets for looking younger, which starts with protecting our skin.
Apply Sunscreen — Often!
Studies have shown that although more people are using sunscreen regularly, they apply too little or don’t reapply it often enough. Dr. Lee suggests a shot glass size amount of sunscreen per whole body application. And not all sunscreen ingredients are the same — some sunscreens block a wider range of ultraviolet rays so they protect you better. Look for titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and/or avobenzone to ensure you are getting adequate broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection. And remember, make-up is NOT enough protection. Dr. Lee suggets using sun block powder if you like to wear makeup.
Everyone Needs to Wear Sunscreen
No matter what your skin color or tone, everyone needs to wear sunscreen. Some people are more sensitive than others, but we all need it.
What Are the Best Skincare Products?
Dr. Lee says you can buy $5 lotion or a $100 lotion, but you have to make sure they are alpha hydrox-enhanced lotions — or AHA. They help encourage the exfoliation of the dry dull skin layer, and help make he skin look more radiant.
The Best Way to Deal With Age Spots
The best way is to use Vitamin C on your age spots with lemon juice. The citric acid in lemon juice can help gradually fade the spots and help even your skin tone.
Homemade Skincare Remedies
There are a lot of great home remedies for the skin that really work says Dr. Lee.
- You can use baking soda and water to exfoliate, and can add grapes, citrus fruits, sugar cane, apples, and pears since they all contain the AHAs that remove the dry dull dead skin layer.
- Using oatmeal, which contains avenanthramides give it anti-itch, soothing, antiinflammatory properties. And saponins, which allow it to moisturize.
- Coffee grounds contain caffeic acid, which is an antioxidant and can even help constrict blood vessels so your skin is less red. You can smash them, add water, and baking soda and apply to your skin.
