The Department of State Services (DSS) has released the detained Ekiti State House of Assembly, Honourable Afolabi Akanni.
Akanni
was arrested on March 4, 2016, over an alleged forgery during the
Peoples Democratic Party’s House of Representatives primaries held in
Ekiti North Federal Constituency and alleged assault on Justice John Adeyeye of the State High Court.
Speaking to newsmen after his release, the lawmaker said the DSS let him go after he collapsed two times in detention.
According to Channels TV, Akanni is currently receiving medical attention at a private hospital in Abuja the nation’s capital city.
During one of senate proceedings, a federal lawmaker, Biodun Olujimi, had condemned the Honourable's 'illegal' detention.
Olujimi
told the Senate that the armed operatives from the DSS invaded the
chamber of the Ekiti State House of Assembly on March 4, and took the
lawmaker.
“The Senate is alarmed that on
Friday, March 4, the hallowed chamber of the Ekiti State House of
Assembly was invaded by armed men of the department of State Services.
“Not
minding that the various committees of the House were meeting, more
than 10 DSS men armed to the teeth invaded the assembly complex shooting
sporadically into the air, thereby causing panic among members and
staff of the House who had to scamper for safety and were afraid for
their lives,” she told the Senate.
On March 17, the Ekiti State government had alarmed Akanni was dead, but the DSS dispelled the claim by presenting the legislator to newsmen alive, but he looked ill even though the Service claimed he was "hale and hearty."
