IT’S NO secret that young people today aspire to look a certain way based on what they are fed by the media. Actually, even us ‘older adults’ feel the pressure especially in the media industry.
But is this actually obtainable and how much of it is photoshopped? Or do these super humans have an eight-hour work meeting in the gym each day? It is definitely true the amount of airbrushing and nip tucking that goes on in photoshop can create unrealistic expectations and crush self esteem.
But at the same time many people use this as an excuse and say that a good body, lean physique and glowing skin is not obtainable and is purely the work of photoshop.
Having a ‘great’ body is generally a reflection of how you treat it. How you define ‘great’ can differ but deep down genetically, the majority of us have the ability to have a body that we feel comfortable in and is attractive in its own unique way.
Subconsciously, like animals, there are theories that we are attracted to a partner who is a potentially a good mating partner. Not just with having all the parts that work and being able to manoeuvre a reverse cowgirl, but with the likelihood of producing healthy offspring.
So how do you become the best version of yourself?
1. Drink enough water
Ideally we should aim to drink around 1 litre/25kg of body weight. This helps every cell function optimally, detoxes the body, slows the ageing process and stops you drinking things you shouldn’t!
2. Move — Get off your bum!
We’re not built to sit 8 hours a day. Take plenty of breaks, walk to the water fountain, use a stand-up desk converter. If you’re still stuck then you need to make time to make up for it before or after
3. Do something that makes you sweat — Everyday!
If you’re time poor, the best way to exercise is short bursts of power/speed with short recovery. Try picking 5 exercises, say push-ups/jumping lunges/mountain climbers/side planks/box jump and do each exercise flat out for 30 secs, rest for 15 secs between each. Do this 5 times through and you’ll be done in 30 mins (and spent I must add).
4. Cut refined sugar
Also cut down on anything processed that breaks down easily to sugar, like processed carbohydrates. Sugar is one of the biggest killers today and feeds our inflammation pathways, obesity, gut issues, diabetes etc.
5. Avoid the isles in your supermarket ê
You can get most things you need from the fresh produce section when you first walk in, along with the refrigerated section. You really only need to venture into the isles for spices, cleaning and personal care products. Try and limit this and make your sauces etc fresh!
Oh, and if its your birthday then you can have your cake and eat it too! Enjoy yourself but life is about balance.
Let’s all be the best versions of ourselves. Let’s walk our talk and be the person our kids and our colleagues can aspire to. Be the inspiration in your community!
