FORMER Australian Idol winner Kate DeAraugo has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs.
The 29-year-old, who has spoken openly in the past about her dark days of drugs and depression, was charged with driving a vehicle with illicit drugs present in blood and is set to appear in court on July 31.
Her manager Dave Wilkins confirmed the news with Confidential this morning.
“Unfortunately Kate has been suffering from addiction for quite a long time and unfortunately right now she has relapsed and it is really unfortunately after all the hard work she has done to get herself back on track,” Wilkins said.
“We are going to be helping her as her family and her management all the way through to get to the conclusion of this and get her healthy.”
Just three weeks ago, she took to Instagram to post a message which read, “Life is a Sunday. There are bad days ahead and behind, but it’s all OK if you live for today,” which she captioned: “Happy Sunday. Life is a roller coaster.”
The Maybe Tonight singer, who once weighed 127.5 kilos and went on to shed exactly half her body weight, has been open about her “dark” days post finding fame on Australian Idol.
“We all have choices,” DeAraugo previously told Confidential.
“You can’t blame anyone. Sure I felt crap due to some of the things that happened but I can’t put that on anybody and that was the turning point for me, owning my own stuff.”
“I just disappeared. I would give things a go and I wasn’t in the right headspace so I’d fail at it. I tried to get a normal job, tried being a receptionist. It was a chain of events that led to me saying I’d had enough.”
She then fell into a depression and turned to drugs to cope.
“Drugs, depression, the lot. Anything, I did it,” the Aussie singer previously told Kyle and Jackie O.
“Anything and everything. I was out of control in every aspect of my life. Basically, after the Young Divas lost the plot I went into hiding ... After that, I really lost the plot and just ate myself into a mess.”
DeAraugo, who was the third winner of Australian Idol in 2005, is in the midst of writing a book, Confessions of a Fallen Idol where she is set to talk about her “dark past” and reveal the “messy time” in her life.
